- DCT, Leading the Standards for Medical Device Quality in UzbekistanBy Oh In-kyu, Medical News & Ilgan BoseaOneBioGen’s TheraSoap, BL Tech’s CAST, B. Braun’s Surgical Sutures among Various Distributed Products Focus on Developing Collaborative Channels and Local Achievements – Country Director Jae-Won Choi: “Prioritizing Co-Prosperity over Profit”[Medical Times – Report by In-Gyu Oh] Uzbekistan has consistently worked to improve the quality of its medical services since gaining independence. In particular, the COVID-19 pandemic significantly increased the demand for vaccines, essential medicines, and healthcare infrastructure. In response, President Mirziyoyev has implemented a range of policies aimed at enhancing medical services and the supply of pharmaceutical products.Unlike the pharmaceutical sector, which receives policy support for domestic manufacturing, the medical device field in Uzbekistan has actively encouraged the introduction of high-quality foreign equipment. In 2021, a Presidential Decree was issued to drastically simplify the registration and testing procedures for imported medical devices. Since June of the same year, medical devices (including accessories) certified by the following internationally recognized institutions have been exempt from testing upon registration, thereby easing access to the Uzbek market for foreign medical device manufacturers.DCT International Expands Influence in Uzbekistan Amid Central Asia’s Post-Soviet ResurgenceAs Central Asia enters what many view as its "second renaissance" following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, South Korean medical device companies are ramping up efforts to penetrate the growing market. Among them, DCT International (CEO Han Se-hyuk) is drawing attention with its aggressive local operations, backed by an established subsidiary in Uzbekistan.Jae-Won Choi, Head of DCT International's Uzbek subsidiary, Do Challenge for Tomorrow FC LLC, spoke with Medical Times, stating, “We are distributing medical devices that contribute to the advancement of Uzbekistan’s healthcare environment.” He added, “We serve as the exclusive distributor for a wide range of medical products, including TheraSoap by the publicly listed Korean company OneBioGen, CAST and underpads by BL Tech—the largest Korean exporter of casts—and surgical sutures from B. Braun.”In April 2019, DCT International participated in the KOTRA Overseas Branch Expansion Program, where it identified the potential of the Uzbek market. Just three months later, in July of the same year, the company established a local subsidiary. With CEO Han Se-hyuk’s 20 years of experience in the medical device industry, DCT formed a sales team composed of former doctors and pharmacists, thereby ensuring strong medical expertise.Jae-Won Choi, Head of the Uzbek subsidiary, has successfully registered 20 medical device products locally and developed extensive distribution networks in collaboration with numerous hospitals. Through these efforts, DCT has enhanced the quality standards for medical devices in Uzbekistan and established its brand as a modern and professional medical device company. When asked about the key to achieving numerous accomplishments, Jae-Won Choi remarked, “I would highlight our strength in efficient K-SALES,” adding, “Our competitive edge lies in offering outstanding Korean-made products backed by professional medical knowledge. Under the motto Good Product · Better Price · Best Results, DCT International focuses not on profit, but on mutual growth and shared success.” Choi shared that he feels a deep sense of pride and fulfillment when receiving thank-you letters or messages from patients whose conditions have improved thanks to their products. He emphasized that this is rooted in DCT International’s 3P philosophy: People, Positive, Practice — the belief that beautiful outcomes emerge when good people, with positive hearts, commit themselves wholeheartedly to their work. He concluded by saying, “It is a source of great pride to be part of DCT International today — a company that started with humble Korean medical devices and has now grown to establish a successful overseas subsidiary, strengthened by the close-knit bonds among all our team members.” “Launching Essential Medical Devices like Stents — Striving to Serve as a Trade Bridge for Korean Medical Equipment”Uzbekistan, with a population of 35 million—the largest in Central Asia—has abundant natural resources despite its relatively low income level. Strategically located at the heart of the Eurasian continent, it is widely regarded as a highly valuable partner for economic cooperation with South Korea. In particular, the network of approximately 180,000 ethnic Koreans (Koryoin) in Uzbekistan is considered a key strategic asset. Moreover, as a designated priority partner country for Korea’s Official Development Assistance (ODA) initiatives, Uzbekistan has a growing demand for infrastructure development projects across various sectors. In line with these trends, DCT International plans to launch essential medical devices, such as stents, that can generate synergy with its existing product portfolio. The company aims to grow into one of Uzbekistan’s leading medical device firms, while also serving as a vital trade channel for Korean-made medical equipment. Concluding the interview, Jae-Won Choi, Head of the Uzbek subsidiary, shared with a warm smile, “I hope to help establish the quality standard for medical devices in Uzbekistan, contribute to the growth of DCT International’s headquarters in Korea, and also successfully complete my MBA studies at a local university.”
